Storage guide

Which cloud storage should you use?

Object storage looks cheap per gigabyte, until downloads, retrieval fees and minimum durations arrive on the bill. Here’s what each class and provider is good at, what it costs, and the catches.

Prices checked October 2026, in USD, for one US region where they vary. Always confirm on the provider’s own page before committing.

Quick picks

If you know what you're storing and how often it's read, start here.

R2

Serving downloads, images or video to the public

Cloudflare R2

No download fees, however popular the files get.

B2

Cheap backups you restore now and then

Backblaze B2

$6.95/TB, instant access, downloads free up to 3× storage.

S3

Archives you hope never to read

S3 Glacier Deep Archive

About $1 per TB a month; restores take 12–48 hours.

GC

Archives you might need back today

GCS Archive

Archive pricing, but files open instantly.

WS

A flat bill for a big, quiet library

Wasabi

One price, no egress or API fees — if you download less than you store.

OC

Lots of downloads from a big cloud

Oracle Cloud

10 TB of downloads free every month.

S3

Your app already runs on AWS, Azure or Google

That cloud's storage

Transfers inside the same cloud are free or cheap, and identity just works.

MY

No bill, your own hardware

My storage

Self-hosted Garage: $0 in fees, but one disk — keep a backup.

Storage classes

Most clouds sell the same four temperatures. Colder is cheaper to keep and dearer to read — pick by how often you'll open the files, not how important they are.

Hot / Standard

$0.015 – $0.026 per GB a month

Minimum
None
Reading costs
Free
Opens
Instant

Use when: Anything read weekly or more: app data, websites, media you serve, work in progress.

  • No penalties for reading, moving or deleting
  • Simplest to reason about
  • The most expensive way to keep data you rarely touch

Infrequent access

$0.0085 – $0.015 per GB a month

Minimum
30–31 days
Reading costs
≈ $0.01 per GB read
Opens
Instant

Use when: Read about once a month or less: recent backups, older projects, finished media.

  • Roughly half the price of hot storage
  • Still opens instantly
  • Every read costs extra
  • Deleting early is billed as if kept 30 days
  • Small files may be billed as 128 KB (S3)

Cold

$0.0036 – $0.004 per GB a month

Minimum
90 days
Reading costs
$0.02 – $0.03 per GB read
Opens
Instant

Use when: Read a few times a year: quarterly reports, older backups, raw footage you might re-edit.

  • About a fifth of hot storage
  • No restore wait on these classes
  • Reads are expensive — a full restore can cost more than months of storage
  • 90-day minimum

Archive

$0.00099 – $0.0036 per GB a month

Minimum
90–365 days
Reading costs
$0.01 – $0.05 per GB, plus waiting
Opens
Hours

Use when: Kept for compliance or disaster recovery, and you hope never to read it.

  • As little as $1 per TB a month
  • Ideal for long-term, write-once data
  • Restores take hours on most clouds
  • Long minimum durations
  • Retrieval fees and request fees add up fast

Compare costs

Storage price is only half the story. The same terabyte costs very different amounts once people start downloading it.

MY

My storage (self-hosted)

$0 a month in fees

Garage on your own machine, set up by jvinu with docker compose --profile storage.

Best for: Home labs, local backups, privacy, and anything you don't want on someone else's computer.

  • No storage bill — only your disk and electricity
  • Unlimited downloads on your own network
  • Your data never leaves your hardware
  • One disk means no redundancy: back it up
  • Reachable from outside only through a tunnel or VPN
  • You maintain the machine
DB

Dropbox

Plan-based subscription

A file-sync service for people, with an API jvinu can browse.

Best for: Documents and folders people share and sync to their computers.

  • Desktop sync and easy sharing
  • Version history and previews built in
  • Familiar to non-technical people
  • Priced by plan, not per GB
  • Not built as an app back-end: rate limits apply
  • Temporary links last only four hours

Hidden costs

The per-GB price is the line everyone compares. These are the ones that surprise people.

01

Downloads (egress)

Often the biggest line on the bill. The big three charge $0.087–$0.12 per GB after a small free allowance; R2 charges nothing.

02

Requests

Every upload, list and download is a request. Millions of small files can cost more in requests than in storage.

03

Retrieval

Infrequent, cold and archive classes charge per GB read. A full restore of an archive can cost months of storage.

04

Minimum duration

Delete or move an object early and you pay for the rest of its minimum: 30, 90, 180 or 365 days depending on class.

05

Minimum billing

Some providers bill a floor regardless of use: Wasabi bills 1 TB, Spaces starts at $5.

06

Region

The same class costs more in some regions, and copying between regions is charged as transfer.

In jvinu

Open any bucket and press Analytics to see its size, what’s taking the space, which storage classes it uses and an estimated monthly cost from the same prices as this page. Paying a different rate — a discount, another region, a Dropbox plan? Set your own rate there and the estimate follows it.
